NODE+CODE #16 – Other Spaces

End of the year meetup: soup, community, and other spaces

To close out 2024, NODE+CODE #16 brought our community together one last time before the new year. Hosted in the inspiring spaces of basis e.V., the evening focused on projects that explore “other spaces” – from virtual reality as a vessel for storytelling to AI-driven design education and digital creative networks.

Before diving into the presentations, we all had the chance to explore the HAP studio programme exhibition at basis. Their works engaged with urgent themes like the climate catastrophe, repressed histories of Europe and Greece, and the experience of Black Germans—offering deep reflections on personal and collective memory.

Presentations featured two fascinating projects:

Her Last Song
This immersive VR experience set in North Macedonia intertwines 360-degree video, 3D animation, and interactive elements to examine how personal and collective memory become embedded in the spaces we inhabit. Through fragmented memories of music, war, and love, Her Last Song creates a liminal space—a void between past and present.

KITeGG
An initiative designed to integrate AI into design education, KITeGG connects technology and society through creative practice. This collaborative project, supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state of Rhineland-Pfalz, spans five universities and aims to make AI both tangible and comprehensible for design students.

And of course, no NODE+CODE would be complete without good drinks and warm soup—this time with a cozy bar run by basis e.V. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating another year of creative coding, digital culture, and community!

Carlos Hurtado Múnera

Experimental filmmaker and video artist from Bogotá-Colombia, focused on the alternative production of media projects that explore the identity of the digital image, and the liminality of formats. Currently, he incorporates expanded media to his practice in search of new sensorial perceptions of the body, territory and memory.

Paul Eßer

Paul is a designer and creative technologist. He has a Bachelors in communication design from the University of Applied Sciences Mainz. In his work his main focuses are generative ai models as design tools and the use of web technologies in hybrid publishing. He held workshops on ai type design at the University of Applied Sciences Tier, the Dutch Design Week and at the University of Applied Sciences Mainz. At the KITeGG project he works as a research assistent on the web to print unlearn publication.
