NODE+CODE #18 – Smart City Lab
Rethinking and discussing the smart city.
NODE+CODE #18 will unravel the smart city and take on a special format. The meetup will incorporate the semester presentations by Sebastian Oschatz students’ from the Offenbach University of Art and Design.
Program
The organisational infrastructure of a city is often hidden behind the built and visible infrastructure. It is difficult to understand, difficult to discuss and also difficult to design. At the same time, it is of central importance for liveable cities.
The Stabsstelle Digitalisierung of the city of Frankfurt is planning a practical laboratory in which the topic of Smart City will be made tangible through easily accessible offers.
Inspired by the questions in this planning process, we developed possible measures for such a practical laboratory in the course. We developed test setups to experiment in the lab. We visualise the complexity but also the efficiency of the city administration. We develop innovative social formats to promote necessary discussions. We use digital and analogue techniques to enable new formats for discussion and thinking – to strengthen democratic processes with all members of urban society.
Contributing students
DEVIN CAN presents a physical discussion space in which video formats are produced. It uses various tools to make visual information directly available and to connect citizens with each other even after the event.
BIKEM ŞAHIN presents a multiplayer game in which players have to solve tasks on the topic of digitalisation together and have a shared and playful learning experience.
XINRAN YIN presents a physical construction kit for citizen participation. 3D printed parts and building blocks make it possible to experiment with the design of public spaces for citizens of all ages. Xinran also shows a game with gesture recognition that makes citizen participation processes more lively and personal.
XENIA WATSON presents a sculptural wall object that makes the complexity of the actors in the city administration visible and tangible – in order to playfully explore it and inspire new forms of organisation.
We will – as always – organize free soup for everyone <3

What is NODE+CODE?
Since 2014, the meetup invites creatives, designers, artists, coders and anyone else interested to a series of events with changing locations and thematic focuses – all related to working with code in design and the arts. We want to build a community of people interested in the creative and critical application of technology in Frankfurt and Rhein-Main.
