Lantern Coding with Rosi Grillmair
part of the new training program series DW Play Test
Lanterns, with their play of shadows, are among the oldest forms of “displays.” In this Play Test Workshop, we’ll play with light and colors, but we’ll generate the patterns digitally: with two algorithms inspired by nature. They’re called Voronoi and Delaunay and mimic the growth of leaves and the arrangement of cells.
Using the simple, visual programming language vvvv, you can program your own mathematical pattern generated by nature. We’ll use a laser cutter to cut them and turn them into lanterns for the next lantern parade or for your home.
In this Play Test, you’ll learn the basics of the vvvv programming language, gain insight into Rosi Grillmair’s workshop format, and be able to implement it independently in the future or adapt it for your own purposes. No prior programming experience is required.
A certificate of participation can be issued for this training session.
If possible, bring your own laptop running Windows. However, we do have some laptops available on site.

Play Test is a series of professional development sessions and workshops for artists, educators, and anyone interested in learning about methods of cultural education and creative and critical engagement with technology. Participants can apply what they learn in their own educational projects or workshops and adapt it to their own practice. All programs are developed by and in collaboration with artists and cultural practitioners.

remony.wordpress.comRosi Grillmair (1991, AT) is a programmer and artist part of the creative community sorrounding open source tools such as vvvv and Processing.
She taught Workshops on Creative Coding at Medialab Prado / Madrid (ES), TADAEX / Teheran (IR), Schmiede / Hallein (AT) and JUGEND HACKT – HELLO WORLD / Linz (AT) and Generative Design at HS Pforzheim.
In her own work, she most commonly employs data visualizations and generative design herself. Rosi currently lives in Linz and is part of creative technology studio RGBA and Creative Coding Linz.
