We at NODE and the Hochschule Mainz – University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Design, Department of Communication Design, are jointly offering the following professorship qualification position starting next summer semester 2022 (01.03.2022):
Tandem Professorship in the field of Media Informatics at the Faculty of Design and with NODE (m, w, d)
(employment under private law / limited to 2.5 years)
With our tandem professorship, we enable you to acquire non-university professional experience to qualify for a professorship at a university of applied sciences and agree on an accompanying personnel development concept with you. You will be employed 50% at Mainz University of Applied Sciences (remuneration based on grade W 1) and 50% at NODE in Frankfurt according to pay group E 14 based on the TV-L. The tandem professorship will be financed for a limited period of 2.5 years from the federal-state programme “FH-Personal”, a funding programme for the recruitment and development of professorial staff at universities of applied sciences.
The Hochschule Mainz – University of Applied Sciences at the Rhine-Main media location is characterised by excellent quality in teaching and research. Students receive practical training in small groups. There is personal, open and friendly interaction between professors and students. more than 5,500 young people study and research here.
The Department of Design has a wide variety of subjects in the design disciplines and professionally equipped workshops that offer ideal conditions for innovative teaching and research. With international symposia and several research institutes, it participates in current scientific discourses.
At Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the Tandem Professorship will be responsible for the following fields in teaching and applied research:
- Design using code at various levels (HTML/CSS in BA basic studies, JavaScript in BA advanced studies, Python in Master, …) and contexts (web publishing, interaction, machine learning).
- Examination of the methods and tools of the so-called Digital Humanities from a design perspective (data visualisation, explorative and literate programming, …)
- Relationships between research, transfer and design
NODE is a platform for practical, creative and theoretical exchange on technology and digisation in society, the creative industries, science and the arts. Since 2008, NODE has been developing education formats, festivals, programmes for political and cultural youth media education, international exchange programmes and cross-disciplinary cultural projects. The artistic, creative and critical use of new technologies is the central method and means of reflecting on our analogue-digital world of life and work. NODE works closely with educational and cultural institutions, partners from research and theory, as well as various parts of the creative industries in the development of all its programmes.
At NODE, the Tandem Professorship will be responsible for the following tasks and will engage in particular in programme and project development with the below mentioned focus:
- Addressing the ethical and political dimensions of digital tools, code and design.
- Developing and implementing formats for critical reflection and artistic engagement with technology and, in particular, design with programming code
- Developing and planning educational formats (workshops, etc.) in the field of creative coding outside the university context.
- Support fundraising for the implementation of the above-mentioned programmes
What you need to bring
The hiring requirements for a tandem professorship are:
- a successfully completed university degree in a design discipline with a
computer science or applied computer science with a design component - pedagogical aptitude, which must be proven separately
- aptitude for design, which must be proven separately
- special aptitude for scientific work
- ability to work in a team
- fluency in German is a minimum criteria
- fluency in English is an advantage
We expect the willingness to take on related or interdisciplinary teaching areas and to participate in interdisciplinary projects. The ability and willingness to teach courses in English must be demonstrated in the application and in a sample course. The use of digital media in teaching should be familiar.
