The sense of smell is one of the few human senses which still resist digitalisation. Scent is still magical and difficult to grasp. Mark Lukas explores various olfactorics solutions and the possibilities and problems of designing interactions with scents. He is working on a starter kit allowing interaction designers working with scents using arduino and vvvv.

Lukas is interested in the fields of tension between Interfacedesign, Informationdesign and research. His Project Smelling Data – Translating Data into Scents deals with the sensory perception of the smell. In our daily lives we are exposed to thousands of different odors. But can we design with scents? Or can we print scents? If so, what possibilities do we have to get creative with it? In his Master-Thesis work at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam he explored the possibilities of translating digital data into scents, occuring dangers and possible application fields. In his talk he will provide an insight into his scent—prototypes and current attempts of olfactory solutions in the field of design, art and research.
