Introduction to DX11 Rendering

vvvv provides a huge set of graphics rendering features. Creative coders can even extend these built-in modules for custom needs or visual finishing. This workshop explains the processes on the software side, possibilities of your graphics card and how to write code for image generation (shaders).

 

What happened in your workshop?

We covered some basic graphics rendering terminologies, gave an overview about all features the DirectX 11 graphics pipeline offers, which tasks are preferably tackled on the GPU side of things (why even bother moving away from mere patching), and most importantly: learned how to write your very first own custom shader in HLSL.

Who was the target audience of the workshop?

Artists, designers and VJs that are interested in how rendering 3d graphics in vvvv works and wanted to learn writing shaders. 

What did attendees of the workshop learn?

  • Get a quick overview of DX11 pack and its features compared to DX9 (RenderState, Validators, Custom Semantics, Building your own IndexedGeometry, Geometry Topologies, Instancing, …)
  • Writing own TextureFXs
  • Writing Vertex Shaders
  • Writing Geometry Shaders + GS Streamout
  • Combining all of these techniques in one single patch to come up with a little something as seen above

Woeishi Lean is a digital artist who produces computational media at a the intersection of design, technology and realtime visualizations. Bridging his time between large-scale media installations, lecturing and holding workshops, and enthusiast’s ventures he has been able to sustain a truly interdisciplinary career.

Through his practice he has always been heavily contributing to the live-programming environment VVVV. Starting off as a VJ, then diving into interactivity for some years at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, woei is now trotting the globe creating performances and installations.

The site-specific installation RingGingBling (Prague, Moscow, Vienna), Realtime music visualization mapping in the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), the Austrian Pavilion for the 2010 Shangai Expo, Realtime music visualization mapping of the Arc de Triomf (Barcelona), interactive kinetic sculpture nemore (Leipzig, Vienna, Salzburg),… to name a few.
