Interacting with flying drones

By the availability of drones on the consumer market, a new wave of discussion on the impacts of surveillance technology on modern life erupted. In parallel artists discovered choreographies of drones as an aesthetical medium for critical reflection of surveillance.

What if drones automonously follow people or invade and record privacy? For the workshop ‘Let’s fly copters’ host Woeishi Lean developed a driver for controlling drones by intuitive interactions like hand gestures – and participates experimented with various settings and developed ideas for choreographies and an artistic reflection of surveillance.

The workshop combined previous knowledge from other workshops of NODE13’s educational plattform such as animation, logic, basic math and rudimentary understanding of physics and transformation.

 

Participants experiments

Within this workshop people were invited to start their own little experiments: Controlling a drone via LeapMotion hand-tracking and collecting experiences for innovative interfaces for controlling machines.

Woeishi Lean is a digital artist who produces computational media at a the intersection of design, technology and realtime visualizations. Bridging his time between large-scale media installations, lecturing and holding workshops, and enthusiast’s ventures he has been able to sustain a truly interdisciplinary career.

Through his practice he has always been heavily contributing to the live-programming environment VVVV. Starting off as a VJ, then diving into interactivity for some years at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, woei is now trotting the globe creating performances and installations.
