Light design – Programming DMX & Visualizing with GrandMa2
This workshop brought the technical aspects of lightning design for stage shows across to you. We learned about interconnecting content of traditionally separated AV production pipelines with vvvv and how to visualize your compositions of light and other content as compelling real-time preview.
What happened in the workshop?
We learned from scratch what the DMX and Artnet protocols are, and how to use them in vvvv to create a lighting solution. Also, we visualized the created light setups with real dmx fixture devices as well as in GrandMa2 3d. Therefore, we did learn some basics about this professional lightning software, how we can send data to it, and how a lighting operator can send data to vvvv to control our compositions in real-time.
Who was the target audience of the workshop?
Light designers/technicians who wish to control lightning from vvvv, or send data to from vvvv to other professional lighting systems.
Any scenographer, artist, stage designer or VJ who creates dynamic content for shows in which the lighting department needs to be fed with real-time values from the visual composition.
What did attendees of the workshop learn?
Electronics of the DMX protocol
Basics logic of the Artnet protocol
How to send / receive Artnet data from vvvv in a simple friendly way
How to patch fixtures in vvvv for simple use and re-use
How to build and use an advanced custom patch solution (instead of a standard dmx console)
Basics of GrandMa2 (desktop and console) with patching fixtures, using them, park, sending and receiving Artnet
Basics of GrandMa2 visualizer to preview what we are sending from vvvv in a wysiwyg way
Controlling WS2811 digital pixel LED stips
If we have time, building a Artnet to DMX node with Arduino
If we have time, building a Artnet to i2c wireless node to controll ws2811 led stips
