Procedural Noise – Everything your parents didn’t tell you
Procedural noise functions are a fundamental part in computer graphics, from the early 1970s until today’s generative design and CGI. Their aesthetic as well as their field of applications seem to be endless.
What happened in the workshop?
We looked in to the beauty of mathematics as seen in procedural noise functions, their basis, uses and provocations for further exploration.
Who was the target audience of the workshop?
Anyone with an interest in mathematics and applied design.
What did attendees of the workshop learn?
- A deeper understanding of the reasons for the ubiquitous use of noise in computer graphics
- Noise primitives e.g. the popular Perlin, Simplex, Cellular
- Extended forms such as fractal variations and usage of derivatives, domain distortion, cool combinations of these and other elements
- Basic & advanced usage scenarios for for texturing, distortion, motion, etc.
- Fun working examples to take home
