Basic Requirements:

To become a mentor, you should be 19 years or older, have coding skills, and enjoy working with teens aged 12 to 18. If you have experience in this area, it’s a plus! Additionally, while most activities in the programming world happen in English, good German skills are advantageous, as many participants do not speak English fluently (yet). Additionally, you need a current extended police clearance certificate. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll guide you through the process and let you know everything you need to know and do. More info in German here.

Programming Skills:

The goal is to provide participants with a wide range of support. That’s why we’re looking for a group of mentors with diverse skill sets and experiences in programming, creating a friendly and supportive environment for everyone involved. But you don’t have to be a pro in all things coding – everyone’s there to help each other out.

It’s very important to us to enable everyone to participate. Therefore, feel free to contact us at ffm@jugendhackt.org if there are any restrictions or obstacles for you regarding the event. We are more than happy to work together to find a solution.

What you get from us:

In return for your voluntary work, we offer you:

  • a free pedagogical-didactic training as part of the mentor briefing
  • networking opportunities with other developers and creative coders from all over Germany
  • a fantastic atmosphere, lots of experience, and the participants’ grateful smiles
  • little sleep
  • plenty of mate (the caffeinated soft drink)
  • eternal gratitude from the teams of NODE, the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany, and mediale pfade

More info?

You can find more information about the event HERE and on the Digitale Welten Website. More general information about the project can be found on the Jugend hackt Website.

→ What is NODE?

NODE is a non-profit organization working in the field of creative coding, digital arts and design, an international platform for the critical reflection of technology and society and network in Frankfurt am Main and in Hesse.

Since 2008, NODE has been developing educational formats, organizing international artist exchange programs, conferences and commissioning cross-disciplinary artistic projects. NODE started as an analog gathering of an internationally distributed community of creative coders and developers of the visual programming language vvvv, turning into an organization for more holistic political, cultural, artistic, informatic and digital media discourses and education. NODE runs a festival for digital arts and creative technologies called NODE Forum for Digital Arts. The 6th edition of the Frankfurt festival was dedicated to the ecological dimension of new technologies and their use in art, the creative industries and design. The festival invites an international audience of professionals, artists and coders as well as an intergenerational general audience to critically examine their use of technologies, their professional practice and question the status quo of their industries.

NODE is also a recognized voluntary youth welfare organization in Hesse. Together with international media artists, we develop workshop and other project formats for young people that invite them to critically and creatively take apart or reinvent technologies. We organize the youth media art festival Digitale Welten and Jugend hackt Frankfurt, as well as various other projects for young people. We also develop educational programs for professionals in out-of-school youth work in Hesse.

When you pay your groceries at the supermarket checkout, the thermal printer that prints the receipt is just something usual that would not particularly get your attention. But when you take this device out of the supermarket and use it to design a poster, it suddenly becomes un-usual. The gesture of re-contextualizing and the intervention into the software create a moment of defamiliarization that makes the technology visible, opens a critical gaze and makes the technology usable as a tool for designing something new. The usual becomes unusual. This also leads to the possibility to question everyday circumstances critically. What invisible power structures are embedded in technology, how can they be made visible? Can we understand re-contextualisation as a way to make technology more accessible?

With the online-publication »re-coding everyday technologies« we want to look at how the unusual and methods that subvert can be used for a more critical understanding of everyday digital technology and what the role of design could be to enable engagement with technology. As »re-coding« we understand acts of altering or reinterpreting digital technology e.g. through intervention in their codes, but also as a change in meaning or context – changing encodings, cultural codes or hidden structures.

We are looking for contributions that re-code everyday technology or reflect the re-coding of digital technology. Areas of interest are for instance:

  • Explorations into aesthetics and interrelations of everyday / unusual media
  • Design experiments with everyday technology
Examples / Instructions / Tutorials of unusual use of everyday digital technology
  • How subverting digital media can be revealing about the technology, the design of technology or the role of everyday digital technology in society
  • How methods of re-coding / subverting / de-familiarizing can be used in (visual) design
  • How can design as a form of counter-action make technologies visible and critically examine them?
  • Which bodies are considered when everyday tools are designed and which aren’t? How can tools be re-coded to make them more accessible for diverse audiences?
  • How can an unusual design activate audiences and elicit critical reflection?
  • How design, standards and habits are connected

The Online Publication

The online publication will take the shape of a browser-based application and can present browser-based work, concept descriptions, theoretical reflections, tutorials for recoding, documentation of installations or other experimental hybrid formats. We are specifically interested in projects that use digital media / (creative) coding and that could also be displayed on a screen (e.g. low res LED panel). Projects can be, but are not limited to, interventions, designs, theoretical or artistic perspectives or combinations.

Your contribution must be able to be shown in the browser-based publication and participants must be willing to document and open source their code for publication.

The project will be launched and shown as part of an exhibition from 11th to 20th October at the LUX Pavillon in Mainz, in collaboration with the symposium Interpose.

How to Apply

The call is open for artists, coders, designers, practitioners, students and amateurs. We are explicitly interested in contributions by artists underrepresented in tech communities.

Artist honorarium: 500€ (incl. VAT)
Deadline Open Call: 23. July, 2023

Your contribution will be compensated with a honorarium of 500 €.

To apply please send an e-mail including a short proposal (description incl. applied media of max. 1 page, PDF + sketch, video or photo, if available) for your contribution and a short bio (for potential publication, incl. work focus, interests, pronoun) to unusualmedia@nodeforum.org

Under the motto C0DES & FRI3NDS, young people between the ages of 10 and 18 are invited to take part in four art and programming workshops dealing with friendship, technology and artificial intelligence.

Instructed by international artists Janne Nora Kummer, Sarah Fartuun Heinze, Naoto Hieda, Stine Marie Jacobsen and Joni Barnard, the participants will develop exciting projects to explore our digital-analog world in a creative and critical way.

Digitale Welten is all about trying things out and thinking critically about our digital society! Whether with code or with scissors and paper, screwdriver or clipboard. The focus is on exploring social issues through art and technology.

→ What are your tasks?

As a workshop assistant, you will support an artist in the preparation and implementation of their workshop: You will get to know the artists and the Digitale Welten team in an online kick-off meeting. Then, you will assist in workshop planning, organizing workshop materials, and setting up the space. During the workshop, you will be a point of contact for the participants and assist them in realizing their projects or providing support when needed. You will contribute your own ideas and skills (in art, social or media education) as well as your organizational talent. You will step in when last-minute items need to be procured or organized. After the workshop, you will be available for joint reflection on the workshop and assist in preparing the workshop’s “results” for the Digitale Welten exhibition.

The workshops will take place from October 23 to 25, from 11 am to 4 pm, in Frankfurt am Main. The setup will take place approximately 1-2 hours before the start of each workshop. The exact location will be announced soon. Immediately following the workshops, together with the artists, we will develop the exhibition, which will open on October 27 at the TOR Art Space. At the opening, you will be welcoming the participants from your workshop.

We have designed our own 3D festival experience for NODE20 in Hubs which will be a platform for gathering in virtual space, meet ups, workshops and for our exhibition.

In Mozilla Hubs you will support people with:

  • navigating their avatar through different spaces
  • joining a virtual session or workshop or other parts of the program
  • engaging and interacting with other users and the community
  • building additional structures

Festival Hub

NODE20’s main virtual Festival Hub is the web and mobile app Talque. Here, festival visitors can attend the conference sessions streamed from Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and join the conversations. In Talque you help people to:

  • watch the multiple live streams of our program
  • join the interactive online workshops
  • engage on our physical stages via live chat, Q&A and webcam
  • network and discuss with the speakers, artists and the whole community
  • host own agenda sessions on our virtual Unconference Stage

The first hackathon for young coders (12-18y) in Frankfurt (Main) will take place during NODE17. As the motto of Jugend hackt is “Improving the World with Code” it totally fits the program of this year’s NODE under the headline of ‘Designing Hope’.

To turn Jugend hackt Frankfurt (Main) into a success story, we need YOUR support as mentor!

During Jugend hackt, the participants will be accompanied and supported by tech-savvy and open-minded mentors. These help out in the realization of projects, troubleshooting and technical questions of any kind.

Jugend hackt Frankfurt am Main will take place during the weekend from June 30th – July 2nd. If you are enthusiastic about technology and volunteering for a good cause and free to support us in this adventure, please sign up as mentor here: https://jugendhackt.org/mentorin-werden/.

What you should bring to the table:

Anyone above the age of 19  who is open for or experienced in the exchange with a younger audience in the age span between 12 and 18 can be a mentor. Additionally, you should be able to speak a certain level of German as most of the participants will be from the local communities and their English might not yet be fluent.

Tech/Coding Skills

The aim of Jugend hackt is to create a setting for peer-learning of various aspects of technology. The team of mentors should function as an inspiring and diverse pool of knowledge and bring a variety of skills related to technologies to the table. Therefore, we’re looking for a diverse and colorful mix of people with different specializations.

What you get in return?

For your volunteering support, you will receive:

  • a free pedagogical workshop in the shape of the mentors instruction workshop
  • networking opportunities with coders and developers from all over the world in the context of Jugend hackt and NODE17
  • an amazing atmosphere and 3 days of excited young experts around you
  • quite some bottles of Mate
  • little sleep
  • infinite gratefulness of the NODE team, the Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland and mediale pfade.org – Verein für Medienbildung
  • Additionally, you can take part in all NODE Forum workshops during the week running up to the Jugend hackt event!
