Are you at least 19 years old, enjoy creative work with children and teenagers and want to get involved as a volunteer? Then join this year’s Digitale Welten Festival in Frankfurt!

You will guide young people in thinking critically and creatively about digital reality. Under this year’s motto “SWIPE RIGHTS: Adults broke the internet. Now they want to ban it.” you’re invited to help young people push back against digital restrictions and invent a better online world using creative, technical and artistic tools. The participants aged 11 to 18 will develop their own projects during a creative hackathon and afterward, their creations will be showcased in a public exhibition.

Festival Setup: October 12, 2026
Creative Hackathon: October 13–15, 2026
Exhibition Opening: October 16, 2026

As a mentor, you can expect to:

  • Engage: Work with young participants, inspiring and guiding them through their projects.
  • Facilitate: Help them brainstorm and turn their ideas into projects.
  • Collaborate: Partner with talented artists and other mentors who will support the projects with their skills and creative ideas.
  • Support: Provide hands-on assistance and mentorship to help the participants succeed.

Good German skills are advantageous, as many participants do not speak English fluently (yet). Additionally, you need a current extended police clearance certificate. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll guide you through the process and let you know everything you need to know and do.

That’s why we’re looking for a group of mentors with diverse skill sets, creating a friendly and supportive environment for everyone involved. You have expertise in coding, design, crafting, tinkering, electronics, music, education, social work or some other comparable field? Awesome, come join us!

It’s very important to us to enable everyone to participate. Therefore, feel free to contact us if there are any restrictions or obstacles for you regarding the event. We are more than happy to work together to find a solution.

→ What should you bring?

  • Commitment to teamwork and engagement
  • The ability to work independently and conscientiously
  • Enjoyment of and ideally initial experience in working with young people
  • The motivation to contribute your own skills, ideas, and questions
  • We need a current extended police clearance certificate (“erweitertes Führungszeugnis”) from you. You will receive a document from us for the application so that you don’t have to pay anything. More info here.

  • An amazing atmosphere and excited young experts around you
  • Tasty food, snacks and drinks
  • Paid special leave or a volunteer compensation paid by us *
  • Our infinite gratefulness <3

More info (in German only) here and here.

Basic Requirements:

To become a mentor, you should be 19 years or older, have coding skills, and enjoy working with teens aged 12 to 18. If you have experience in this area, it’s a plus! Additionally, while most activities in the programming world happen in English, good German skills are advantageous, as many participants do not speak English fluently (yet). Additionally, you need a current extended police clearance certificate. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll guide you through the process and let you know everything you need to know and do. More info in German here.

Programming Skills:

The goal is to provide participants with a wide range of support. That’s why we’re looking for a group of mentors with diverse skill sets and experiences in programming, creating a friendly and supportive environment for everyone involved. But you don’t have to be a pro in all things coding – everyone’s there to help each other out.

It’s very important to us to enable everyone to participate. Therefore, feel free to contact us at ffm@jugendhackt.org if there are any restrictions or obstacles for you regarding the event. We are more than happy to work together to find a solution.

What you get from us:

In return for your voluntary work, we offer you:

  • a free pedagogical-didactic training as part of the mentor briefing
  • networking opportunities with other developers and creative coders from all over Germany
  • a fantastic atmosphere, lots of experience, and the participants’ grateful smiles
  • little sleep
  • plenty of mate (the caffeinated soft drink)
  • eternal gratitude from the teams of NODE, the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany, and mediale pfade

Mozilla Hubs

One of the spaces is the GreenHouse NAXOS, an open virtual playground created in cooperation with studioNAXOS. The project uses Mozilla Hubs – an open source project that explores how communication in mixed reality can come to life. We have designed our own 3D festival experience for NODE20 in Hubs which will be a platform for gathering in virtual space, meet ups, workshops and for our exhibition.

In Mozilla Hubs you will support people with:

  • navigating their avatar through different spaces
  • joining a virtual session or workshop or other parts of the program
  • engaging and interacting with other users and the community
  • building additional structures

Screen GreenHouse NAXOS

Festival Hub

NODE20’s main virtual Festival Hub is the web and mobile app Talque. Here, festival visitors can attend the conference sessions streamed from Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and join the conversations. They are able to share their (professional) profiles, interests and network (professionally or personally).

In Talque you help people to:

  • watch the multiple live streams of our program
  • join the interactive online workshops
  • engage on our physical stages via live chat, Q&A and webcam
  • network and discuss with the speakers, artists and the whole community
  • host own agenda sessions on our virtual Unconference Stage

Help NODE20 to happen!

Your skills:

  • English fluency
  • ability to speak freely with a headset and explain solutions
  • understanding of basic computer technology (microphone, webcam)
  • openness toward people of all kinds of backgrounds, experiences and abilities
  • interest in gaining new experiences with a digital festival and Mozilla Hubs
  • ability to work remotely if you are not based in Frankfurt with a stable internet connection and laptop/PC
  • Time for a 2 h introduction workshop in Hubs or Talque (end of September – week before the festival)
  • approx. 10-13 h during the festival period

Why to volunteer?

We offer:

  • unlimited access to the online festival (incl. the vvvv workshops and talks documentation) (except for the working time sessions)
  • introduction into Mozilla Hubs and Talque
  • insights into digital festival production processes
  • becoming part of a community of artists, developers, designers and researchers
  • “Zeugnis” / certificate for volunteering

Interested? Awesome!

We are looking forward to your applications until 15.09.2020 via e-mail to help@nodeforum.org.

We need you to make NODE17 happen!

We’re looking for motivated volunteers for a range of tasks before, during and after the festival:

  • construction within the space (some day in between June 22nd -25th)
  • helping the technical team with sound and light installation
  • daily routines like venue clean up, entrance check, welcome desk
  • social media support
  • exhibition support and guided tours
  • mentoring of specific workshops for kids and younger audiences
  • dismantling of the festival after the last day (Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th)

Why volunteer? What you get:
